Southend sack groundsman
... as match against Bolton was called off due to frozen pitch .

So is the same going to happen to Leyton Orient and Charlton's ?

Seems harsh ... and cold !

Must be more to it. At least there was reasonable notice - did you see Oxford v Bradford last night?!

You don't get to sack people just like that anymore. There's a lot more to this story.

Apparently a few things gone on not reported. So I have heard last night.

Ken is a smashing bloke who has been over there years and I think the club have done a wrong 'un. He has had very little to work with but the pitch has often been complimented over the years.

Agree with all that Sid...

Re: Southend sack groundsman
Would they sack a player for missing a penalty that meant they missed out on promotion? That would be much, much worse 'incompetence'.

I wonder how much this adverse publicity will cost Ron Martin and Southend Utd in reputational damage in sponsorship and advertising? Not many people out there are anything but outraged by this. Much, much, MUCH more than £60k that's for sure.

The bloke has 27 years of keeping their matches on in bad weather, how much has that saved them? He probably earns about 20 grand a year. Especially as they tweeted a few days before what amazing ground staff they had (which was mysteriously pulled after this).

How much to recruit a replacement who can come in straight away and do as good a job straight away?

Ron Martin should have never got out of his bobsleigh. The finances of that club are an utter mess when similar sized clubs do well at that level. I think he's dropped a massive bollock here, the last thing Southend Utd need is more bad press

Sidney..... so I was told the mistake cost the club about £60k.... it's a tin pot club ... that's a lot of dosh to them...

Re: Southend sack groundsman
Still a bit harsh, the bloke made a mistake. He's an experienced Groundsman after 27 years this seems a bit excessive.

Unless he LUMPED on it being called off and is laughing all the way to the bank of course!

Sorry - Colleague said Groundsman said there would be no need.......

Work colleague who is Southend STH said there would be no need for the cover and blowers. Then it froze. Sacked for incompetence apparently.

Re: Southend sack groundsman
Fucking found it!

1990-91 Rothmans Football Yearbook:

October 1990

19th - Southend turn down 'name-your-price' bid from Zurich Grasshoppers for their two groundsmen after being impressed with the Roots Hall pitch in a TV film.

Nothing wrong with my memory! Actually there are some other cracking bits in there like:

August 1990

7th - Liverpool announce profit of £572,000 despite wages, bonus payments and expenses rising to around £4m. Five employees earn more than £230,000 (£4400 per week) - BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Re: Southend sack groundsman
I remember in the (early?) 1990's that the head groundsman at Southend was headhunted by Grasshoppers Zurich because they were so impressed in a preseason friendly.

Maybe this bloke got his job?!

I dunno why I remember such an obscure piece of news, probably because I thought it unlikely at the time. Probably why I remembered it! Unless I dreamt it!

Best thing about that Chelsea call off was the O/S pulling their article that stated "there is more chance of he'll freezing over than the game being postponed"!

They just survived a winding-up order by paying a tax bill at the last minute

Seems a bit strange sacking an employee of 27 years a couple of days afterwards

I smell a rotten kipper...

Re: Southend sack groundsman
Heard the Chairman had a pop at him and the groundsman told him to Let It Go.
Sacked on the spot
